The Complete IoT Mesh Solution: Making Wi-SUN Deployment Simple

Oct 07, 2026 | Length: 51:59

See how Wi-SUN FAN 1.1 and the Digi XBee for Wi-SUN solution help you build, deploy and manage a secure sub-GHz mesh network, from development kit to production. Includes a live Digi Remote Manager demo.

Digi International and Silicon Labs show how an open-standards Wi-SUN mesh can replace per-device cellular plans in applications that range from small micro mesh networks to city-scale deployments. Chad Steider of Silicon Labs explains the Wi-SUN FAN 1.1 updates, including mode switch for faster over-the-air updates and Low Energy nodes for battery-powered sensors. Quinn Jones of Digi then covers the Digi XBee for Wi-SUN modules, the Digi XBee Hive Border Router and Digi Remote Manager, and shows how the Digi XBee for Wi-SUN development kit gets you to a managed mesh network quickly.

You will see use cases in commercial HVAC, solar inverters, irrigation, agriculture, EV charging in multi-level parking structures, industrial tank monitoring and street lighting, including a London deployment of 15,000 streetlights on 12 border routers. A live Digi Remote Manager demo covers the dashboard, network topology, map view and device details, and the session closes with audience Q&A.

Q&A: The Complete IoT Mesh Solution: Making Wi-SUN Deployment Simple

Can Wi-SUN be used in large commercial buildings? All the content seems to point toward outdoor networks. Are there better sub-GHz alternatives for large commercial buildings?

Chad Steider, Silicon Labs: I'll take that one. From my perspective, a large commercial building is a great application for Wi-SUN. Sub-GHz networks penetrate objects well, as Quinn mentioned with parking garages, and commercial buildings are similar. They are a very tough RF environment. Being able to use the mesh capability, along with the sub-GHz penetration of Wi-SUN, makes it ideal for warehouses, commercial buildings and other large installations where you need both reliable performance and flexibility if a node drops off.

What makes Wi-SUN a strong fit for utilities and industrial IoT deployments that need secure, resilient connectivity at scale?

Chad Steider: I think it comes down to what you get with mesh and sub-GHz, and the scale. Look at how Wi-SUN already performs in the market today, with the 15,000-, 20,000- and 30,000-node networks that Quinn mentioned earlier. Very few networks in the world can handle node counts that high. When you think about the number of sensors you can add to a network like this, you reach scale quickly. That is one of the big advantages of Wi-SUN.

Quinn Jones, Digi: I would add that the sub-GHz option with Wi-SUN offers better range, which makes it more useful for utilities. They struggle to get the range they need in real-world situations. The other advantage is interoperability. You are not stuck with one vendor, and you have options to work with other vendors and supply solutions that use the Wi-SUN protocol. It also allows you to expand. It is not single-purpose. You can add sensors, alarms and other solutions down the road.

When should a customer pick Wi-SUN over another protocol like DigiMesh or cellular? What would be the main reason?

Quinn Jones: I'll start with that one. We talked a little about interoperability, and that is probably one of the biggest reasons to look at Wi-SUN. You can expand with existing networks that use Wi-SUN. I would also say Wi-SUN is better suited to fixed assets. When your assets are moving, or you have mobile assets, DigiMesh, cellular or other protocols may be worth a look.

How does the Silicon Labs Wi-SUN portfolio help product teams move from an initial mesh network concept to a deployed, maintainable solution?

Chad Steider: I'll take that one. The Silicon Labs Wi-SUN portfolio is more than just the IP. We have industry-leading sub-GHz SoCs that are used for Wi-SUN applications, proprietary wireless applications or anything else you can think of in the sub-GHz space. But we go a step beyond the SoC. We have a certified Wi-SUN stack. We have a 1,000-node test network in our lab in Rennes. We bring partners like Digi to the table, who provide modules, network management, routers and all the things you need to go from concept to a deployed network.

Customers can develop with the ICs they are familiar with, and we have the tools to support them. They can use our stacks and bring our partners to the table. On the Wi-SUN side specifically, we are also part of the test network. Wi-SUN has certified test bed units, and anything that goes through Wi-SUN certification has to be tested against them. One of those units is our FG25 platform. So we know what it takes to go through certification. When you combine the expertise of Silicon Labs and Digi, very few suppliers in the world can bring this whole package to the table.

In which target markets do you see the most activity for Wi-SUN testing: EV charging, street lighting, agriculture or industrial applications?

Quinn Jones: I can talk to that, and Chad, jump in if you have thoughts. We looked at EV charging and street lighting. Both are great real-world applications for Wi-SUN, where you have a difficult environment and mesh networking and sub-GHz frequency really help. The one I probably see the most is industrial IoT. It covers a variety of applications, from renewable energy to gathering sensor data in different environments and bringing that data into your platform. That ranges from tank monitoring to sensor monitoring in buildings. Industrial IoT is probably where we are seeing the biggest uptick right now.

Chad Steider: I would say industrial IoT, but also distributed energy and outdoor applications. Look at utility-adjacent applications, such as solar farms. Right now, you may want a closed ecosystem of your own devices, but in the future you may want to open up, and Wi-SUN is a perfect solution for that. The same goes for the agricultural systems I brought up earlier. They combine low-power, battery-powered nodes, like moisture sensors or area sensors, with higher-throughput nodes. You can run a closed ecosystem today, but as the footprint of Wi-SUN expands across the globe, you could at some point connect to a utility network and take advantage of that.

What does the Digi and Silicon Labs partnership enable for customers building end-to-end Wi-SUN solutions, from embedded devices through gateways to network operations?

Chad Steider: I'll take that one to start. I mentioned this when we talked about the Wi-SUN portfolio. Digi and Silicon Labs are both leaders in low-power mesh. We combine what Silicon Labs does on the IC and standards side with what Digi does on the module, gateway and management side. Together, we have created an ecosystem where customers can go to Digi for modules, gateways and device management, all from one source, while relying on Silicon Labs expertise. Anything to add, Quinn?

Quinn Jones: You said it perfectly. It gives you options. You can start with a small network, get to market quickly and then expand. If you want to move to a chipset and deploy thousands or hundreds of thousands of devices, you will need border routers and a management platform. You have all the components ready to put a solution together. Options are the key.

When will the Digi XBee for Wi-SUN development kit be in stock at Arrow?

Quinn Jones: Good question. The kits have shipped to us, so we are about a week or two away from having them at Arrow, in distribution. We are excited for you to see them.
